Ikat Print Dress Material — Unstitched Cotton Suits with Dupatta

In ikat the yarn is tied and dyed before a single thread is woven, so the pattern is built into the cloth rather than printed onto it — which is why an ikat motif has that characteristic soft, feathered edge and reads the same on both faces. Our ikat sets are cotton, unstitched, and come with a matching dupatta.

Why the irregularities are the point

The tied yarn moves a little on the loom, which is where the softened edges of the pattern come from. No two lengths align identically, and the pattern drifts by a fraction as it travels down the cloth. That drift is the signature of the technique rather than a fault in it, and it is the reason ikat is valued.

Wearing and washing ikat cotton

Wash separately in cold water for the first three washes — dyes release a little colour early on, and indigo in particular will bleed onto lighter fabrics. Use a mild detergent, never bleach, and dry in shade rather than direct sun, which flattens depth of colour faster than anything else. Handled properly the colour softens attractively rather than fading out.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ikat, and how do I recognise it?

In ikat the yarn is tied and dyed before weaving, so the pattern is formed by the threads themselves rather than printed on the surface. You can recognise it two ways: the edges of every motif look softly feathered rather than sharp, and the pattern is as clear on the reverse of the cloth as it is on the front.

How is ikat different from a block print?

A block print is applied to finished cloth; ikat is dyed into the yarn before the cloth exists. That is why a block print is crisper on the face than the reverse, while ikat reads equally on both sides and carries its distinctive feathered outline.

Will ikat cotton bleed colour when I wash it?

A little, in the first two or three washes, as surplus dye clears. Wash separately in cold water with a mild detergent until the water runs clear, and keep indigo pieces away from anything light-coloured during that period.

Is ikat suitable for everyday wear?

Yes. Ikat cotton breathes like any other cotton and softens with washing, so it works for office and daily wear as readily as for occasions. Dry it in shade to keep the colour deep.

Does the dupatta come with an ikat set?

Yes. Every set is a complete unstitched suit — top fabric, bottom fabric and a matching dupatta. The fabric lengths supplied are stated on each product page.
